When and Where: Thursday at Maggie’s Farm Rum Distillery in the Strip District
A Rum-Tastic Time: Roughly 100 patrons came out to support Hopital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti and help surpass its $5,000 goal. “Haiti is world-renowned for their rum and sugar cane production, and we thought it would be fun to compare Haitian rum to the rum being made right here at Maggie’s,” said Lenora Vesio, director of development for HAS. Added Mayor Bill Peduto: “Not only did I want to come and see this great new space here in Pittsburgh, but the work being done in HAS is remarkable, and I’m happy to support it.”
Helping Haiti: This one hospital in Deschapelles serves a population about the size of Pittsburgh, close to 350,000 people. More than half of their inpatient care is for children. Dr. Larry Mellon, of the Mellon family, started the hospital in 1956, and the U.S. office is in the Strip District, making this event come full circle.
